The Amish Millionaire

As part of their religious beliefs, the Amish shun modern-day conveniences such as electricity, cars and cell phones, making them great fodder for comedy; but 32-year-old Amish farmer Amos Miller is having the last laugh with his Miller Farms currently generating annual revenue of some $1.8 million. They farm and deliver products such as grass-fed beef, milk-fed pork and 16 varieties of cultured vegetables, without the help of a website for taking orders (they use snail mail), a Facebook fan page, or even a Blackberry. Yes, he does not own a Blackberry, or a computer even, so he won’t read this article.

Miller Farms, located in Bird-in-Hand, Pennsylvania, was started by Amos’ father Jacob, who in 2000, together with Amos, foresaw an increase in interest in nutrient-dense foods. His vision turned out to be spot on, and today the farm is so busy it has to turn away orders from interested food cooperatives!

Amos shared his success story with David E. Gumpert of Business Week.
