If checking your email is like rumaging through an over-stuffed garage, you probably need to go on the “information diet”. The idea is to whittle down the muddle of non-essential items that clog your inbox, leaving only the most useful messages.

The problem is, getting your email under control can seem quite daunting. You know you need to clean it up, but you keep putting it off; you make a start but in the process are unsure of what is still useful and are afraid to throw anything out, so you just keep it all.

NY Times writer Jennifer Walzer chronicles her journey on the “information diet” – the quest to clean up her 1,000 messages strong inbox – and describes the satisfaction of her ultimate success.
